Adults-Only Wedding Wording and RSVP Settings

By Ahmad Tayyem. Published .

Name the people invited and communicate your plans early enough for families to arrange childcare or decide they cannot attend. A guest limit can control how many additional people an RSVP adds. It does not verify anyone's age or replace a clear conversation.

Emily Post's guidance recommends naming invited guests and avoiding an adults-only prohibition printed on the invitation. Its guest-handling advice also recommends contacting affected parents early. The examples below are Bloomvite's practical suggestions for named invitations, a separate details note or a personal conversation. They are not Emily Post quotations or universally required wording.

The invitation names the adults

Dear Margaret and Tom,
Amara and Jonah
invite you to celebrate their wedding
Saturday, 19 June 2027, at 4 p.m.
The Orangery, Hampstead
Reception to follow
Please reply by 22 May

Avoid "and family" if children are not invited. If you know an invited partner's name, use it rather than relying on "and guest."

A separate details note

Our ceremony and reception are for the named adult guests.
We understand that arranging childcare may affect your plans.
Please contact us if you need to discuss your invitation.
Thank you for letting us know by 22 May.

Place this in supporting details rather than presenting it as traditional wording for the formal card. Keep the note clear about whether it concerns the ceremony, reception or both.

A personal message before invitations

Hi Maya, we wanted to let you know early that our wedding celebration will be adults only.
We would love you and Alex to join us, and understand if childcare makes that difficult.
We'll send the invitation details soon.
Please call us if you would like to talk about it.

Send this individually. Do not assume that a night away from children is a gift every parent wants, or that attendance is easy for every family.

Answering a request for an extra place

Hi Sam, thank you for checking with us.
The invitation is for you and Leila, and we aren't able to add children's places.
We understand if that means you cannot attend.
Please let us know by 22 May so we can finalize our plans.

Only give a reason that is true. Do not blame the venue for a decision you made yourselves. Discuss any exceptions directly rather than implying software will decide them.

Match the guest record to the invitation

1. Decide whether the record represents one named person or an agreed party, and make that clear in the message.
2. Set the permitted additional-guest limit to match the places you are offering. An invitation for one adult with no additional guests should not have an open plus-one allowance.
3. If two named adults share a record, review how their party is represented and test the reply form. A numerical allowance alone does not enforce the identity or age of the second person.
4. Review replies before finalizing the list. Ask personally about an unexpected guest or a misunderstanding and record the agreed answer.

Bloomvite does not verify ages or guarantee that every child RSVP is prevented. Children and plus-ones count toward the event's people cap. Do not promise an adult-only validation setting that does not exist.

Separate gatherings need separate explanations

If children can attend a welcome party but not the wedding, say so plainly for each gathering. Configure the appropriate sub-event RSVP assignments and test a sample guest. The public schedule is not a private invitation for each person, so keep sensitive details off it.

Start with an invitation example

These fictional examples use Bloomvite's invitation renderer. Choose one to start an invitation, then replace the names, dates and venue. Supporting notes and personal messages in the guide above are for their labeled purposes.
